Deutsche Bank analyst Jeetil Patel has observed that Sony’s PlayStation 2 console could be nearing the end of its life cycle, following publication of the NPD Group’s latest hardware figures for North America.
Patel notes that sales have fallen substantially on a year-on-year basis, stating, “PlayStation 2 software sales fell 47 per cent year-on-year to $85 million, representing a deceleration from the 33 per cent year-on-year decline last month.”
“While this substantial decline was inevitable, it is currently unclear whether the drop reflects consumer transition to next-gen software or weak spending patterns amongst the low-end consumer”, he added.
“Needless to say, with tougher comps ahead for PS2 software sales, we think that the PS2 may finally be on its way out of the industry for good.”
Patel’s comments follow news that Sony bosses had pledged to support the system for a number of years to come, expecting it to run well into ten years of its life cycle.

I seriously doubt that since it was said like what last year it was going bye bye? If anything 2009 will most likely be when a majority of the PS2 fanbase moves to the PS3. Inevitable price cuts and special bundles will make it so that this transition is possible.
psn id: gingo.... i'm surprised that the ps2 has lasted this long all we should hope for now is that ps2 owners move to the ps3 instead of the other consoles
wasnt sony gona drop the price of the ps2 to 100?
I don't think it's dead, developers just need to make a few more big sellers!
Really? The PS2 might eventually make its way out the market? These guys ar geniouses. Who cares about dropping sales on the PS2. As long as there is profit to made for everyone involved then Sony wont care and continue to support it and the game devs will as well. I am going to purchase King of fighters Xi when it comes out as well and that is a PS2 game.
Ya well with cheap a** people in the world a game system that still has developers releasing games for that only costs $120 and has the largest console game catalog of all time, ya that's going to just roll over and die!!! I bet this guy was telling his customers to buy stocks back in 2000!!!! :)
I just wonder what this analyst was thinking when writing this. Hasn't it sold about 112 million copies? (Give or take a couple). There are only so many people in the world to buy them. I don't understand who pays people to make stupid comments like this.
215k in the month of September in NA says the PS2 is not dead yet. This is the numbers where the 360 has been at before the Halo 3 spike, 360 sales will go back down to 200k even below this, so iwould that mean the 360 is coming to an end?
yea...sure that makes sense...PS2 is dying even though it's got the largest game library of any console with teh most systems sold than any console...wat an idiot.
IMO this is wishfull thinking and we are headed into the strongest sales season of the year, besides $85Millon is nothing to shrug off, lol.
There are over a hundred MILLION of the damn things. so what if the PS2 sales fall of a little?
According to Sony - gamers don't want old PS2 titles. Forget paying for games that are not supported by the new console. Just download - LOL
I think it's apparent he looks at the sales and doesn't give a damn about the games. I doubt he's gamed a day in his life. It's not how many units are sold, but the library of games. The trend can't go on forever, there isn't an inifinte demand. Same thing with the Wii.
Largest library ever and he thinks it's going to roll over and die? 7 months ago was the release of GoW II. But with games like those still around and in full swing, who couldn't see the PS2 dying soon?
