Games Convention leaves Leipzig for new Cologne event in '09

Posted on February 25th, 2008 at 11:55 EDT

The annual Leipzig Game Convention will be getting a host, location, and date change starting at next year's convention in September of 2009.

The German publishers' association BIU has finalized an agreement with Koelnmesse to be the host of a new games event in Cologne beginning in 2009, which would ostensibly take the place Leipzig's Games Convention. The owner of the existing Games Convention, Messe Leipzig, has released a statement expressing its regret.

"Messe Leipzig regrets the BIUs decision to no longer support the Games Convention in Leipzig," a statement read, and went on to explain how the company had offered BIU the option of transferring the GC brand to another city."

Keeping the old Games Convention name has been ruled out by the BIU in favour of a new IP created by Koelnmesse in 2003 and given to the BIU for free, GAMESCom.

The show has officially been confirmed of a change of location from Leipzig to Cologne, Germany. The new show has also been bumped back a month, being moved from August to September. Better accessibility and travel links as well as over 80,000 hotel places in the Cologne area are being touted as the main reasons for the move.

The city of Cologne is prepared for hosting such an event as both the German TV station RTL and the 2009 World Cyber Games are based in Cologne; the organizers have made it clear that they will be working with both entities in concurrence with GAMESCom.

There is no word if Messe Leipzig plans to host a Games Convention regardless of the event's move to Cologne. The company did make it known that if the game industry were to need their services in the future, they would be available on notice.

Ummmm, scheduling conflict anyone? TGS and GC will now both be in September. Prepare for delated news releases for both events, as I doubt many journalists will be able to make it to both.

@Gingo - They do hold Game conventions in the UK...not huge ones but they do.  The Edinburgh Interactive Festival is held every year...thats where the "slip" about PS3 gamer cards and so forth came out last year...Unreal Tournament 3 was bbeing shown off and there was a kind of gamercard thing in the corner that we "weren't meant to see".  On top of that theres usually game event on in london...i believe Play.com are hosting one in Wembley in a week or two that will have soul calibur 4 and a few other games playable...If PSU want it i'd happily travel to london to cover it if i get travel expenses...(fingers crossed)...

In september 09, huh. Well, what if the Tokyo Game Shoe is in September again, as it has been for the past few years. Then what? 2 big shows back to back like that would be interesting to say the least....
