Manhunt 2 finally cleared for UK release

Posted on March 14th, 2008 at 11:24 EDT

A story that we have followed since the beginning is that of Rockstar Games’ battle with the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The long fought legal battle shadowed over the permission to release Manhunt 2 in the UK for the PSP, PS2, and Wii gaming platforms.

To put an end to all of this controversy today the Video Appeals Committee (VAC) has upheld the High Court decision to dispute against the BBFC’s refusal to issue Manhunt 2 with a rating in the UK. Through the VAC the BBFC must now give the title a rating of “18”, allowing it to be released in the region.

In a regretful statement, BBFC’s Director, David Cooke said:

“As I have said previously, we never take rejection decisions lightly, and they always involve a complex balance of considerations. We twice rejected Manhunt 2, and then pursued a judicial review challenge, because we considered, after exceptionally thorough examination, that it posed a real potential harm risk.

“However, the Video Appeals Committee has again exercised its independent scrutiny. It is now clear, in the light of this decision, and our legal advice, that we have no alternative but to issue an ‘18’ certificate to the game.”

Looks like the videogame industry has won yet again. Indeed, eventually society is just going to have to get used to the creative art of interactive storytelling that the videogame industry provides. For a full scoop on how this story developed straight from the beginning, here is a little refresher:

When are people gonna learn?  It is just a video game.  Maybe if parents of children who don't want their precious little ones to see graphic content, they should pay a little more attention to the games they are playing.  Don't let the little kiddies lock themselves up in a bedroom where a parent can't see what game is being played.  Bottom line,  PAY ATTENTION and don't just let your kids pick out any game they want.  That's what the ratings are for.

about damn time! I hate kindergarden laws. I'm a grown-up ffs. Even though I live in Norway, I thinks it's bulls*@t not to release a game that contains mature content. Raise you kids better and look after what they play and buy. Do NOT treat grown-ups like kids...

Thankfully, and finally, a win for common sense!

Now if only parents would give 18-rated games the same respect as 18-rated movies, and stop buying them for their kids, we might make further progress.

I think the problem is that people still think of video games as Pac-Man and Galaga.  As long as the video game name stays so will pre-dispositioned opinions.

Looks like sense has finall prevailed.

Now what needs to happen is parents need to stop buying 18 rated games for their 10 year old kids. That way they cant moan about the content of the game affecting little timmy.

All I have to say is that videogames don't harm people mentally, its a persons up bringing that is usually the case. I think games like Manhunt really show people the consequences of killing someone, in the game its kill or be killed. Manhunt is pretty pointless so I'm not sure if I am going to invest in the new one.
