Microsoft would consider to adopt Blu-ray?

Posted on January 9th, 2008 at 09:24 EDT

Time Warner heading exclusively over to Blu-ray has allowed Sony’s format to take control of 70% of the high definition market. The move, by many people considers this the beginning of the end for HD DVD if not the end already. However, Microsoft is still remaining optimistic.

"I fundamentally don't think...this has a significant impact on Xbox 360 versus PlayStation 3," said Albert Penello, Xbox hardware group marketing manager, "With the PlayStation 2, DVD was a big part in the beginning, but over time, people were not buying it as a DVD player after [the] first year or two."

Despite these comments, we should remind our readers that 87% of owners watch Blu-rays on PS3. So no matter what, increasing interest and support in Blu-ray will bring more light on the PlayStation 3, even if it is short term - and that short-term rush might just be all Sony needs for the PS3 to take over the Xbox 360.

More interestingly, however, Penello did mention that if it came to it, the company would consider creating a Blu-ray add-on for the Xbox 360:

"It should be consumer choice, and if that's the way they vote, that's something we'll have to consider."

He also believes that these Hollywood studios are not being fair to the consumer and taking in their consideration by saying:

"I want consumers to have a voice in this and I think there are a lot of consumers who bought HD DVD who are going to have a say in how this shakes out."

All that can be said to that statement is that there must be a winner and there must be a loser. No matter which way you slice it, the consumer has clearly already decided how this “shakes out” by investing in their format of choice, which is Blu-ray. With that in mind, the studios ultimately make their decisions based on what the consumer invests in. So in essence, Hollywood has taken in the voice and even action of the consumer.

psn id: gingo... i think sony want microsoft to adopt blu ray and use it because microsoft would ahve to pay sony royalties for every blu ray add on sold plus microsoft would need to to pay for the technology and people would still buy ps3s becasue they wouldn't want to pay extra for a blu ray add on

i wouldnt mind the blu-ray on xbox, as long as royalties are paid. and that it is NOT used for the games, only movies!!! this would defintly end the format war and still give a heads up for sony!!!

Why not? I only have BR discs and if the addon was reasonable I could be able to allow freinds to borow drive and movies until they get their own player. Sounds like a great way to make the format more popular.

They said that blu-ray owning 70% of the market will not affect the sales of PS3, this obviously isnt true if not microsoft wouldnt have the idea of making a blu-ray add on for the xbox. They are only going to make an add on because it will help the ps3 and microsoft wont want to lose. lol.

Xbox 360 having a blu-ray add-on is very incoherent cause they declared that "With the PlayStation 2, DVD was a big part in the beginning, but over time, people were not buying it as a DVD player after [the] first year or two.". Why would people buy an add-on for the videogame if they wouldn´t use it. Two years already passed since launch.

I think its a clever decision on Microsofts part!  Thats an unusual thing i know!

Sony are going to have to think very carefully about this one, if they let Microsoft have Blu Ray they will get more market share over HD DVD... thats a big plus!  But,  on the flip side... as things stand the PS3 is the cheapest way to get Blu Ray!  If Microsoft have the add-on drive, this will surely be cheaper than the PS3 so Xbox owners won't ditch there consoles for PS3 with Blu Ray!  Meaning Microsoft will benefit big time!!!  It's a tricky one!

i agree with the above statement, br vs. hd-dvd is different than us saying Xbox vs. PS3 basically one is movie format and the otheris gaming. I do notthink that because sony owns 70% of the hd market it's going to end the console war, games will play an intregal part of the console war because thats what most consumers use it for with the added bonus of the multiple media capabilities. When people hear PS3 they think games that "PLAY" Blu ray. Other words games with benefits.

Microsoft wont need to make a call on that question until Bluray takes off. Right now it is meaningless to them. Bluray is too slow so it does not negate having a hard drive. DVD is faster and cheaper plus  two disks is fine for pretty much any sort of content. Bioshock plays at much higher resolution than 1080p on the PC and thats the bests game of 2007 and voted top 3 for graphics...

If Bluray eventually takes off and people demand it then Microsoft will probably offer an external option. Right now Bluray drive sales is crap - why would anyone bother selling it when the movies for one is too expensive.

Point here is Bluray movies need to be the same or lower priced than DVD.

Maybe its cheaper elsewhere but in Australia the DVD movies sell in volume at the AU $7.95 - $14.95 price point. Above that its a trickle. Bluray is priced at AU$30 and its not selling at all. JB HiFi & Myers (our two largest retailers) report next to zero sales of movies on Bluray or HD-DVD.

Also the selection is crap. Even if you are curious and go out to buy one. You stand in front of the itty bitty display and look at Movies Ive seen twice already. Then look at the price and say Meh... I got better things to do with my money.

Meanwhile millions of people can download one of  "AXXO" famously good quality rips of Legend or American Gangster on mininova. its 800MB and takes aboute 1 to 2 hours...

Which brings me tro my last point.... The fact is the fastest growing segment of the download market is not 4GB DVD but the sub 700MB. The fastest growing market is downloads for portable playing. Sony got it right with PSP. There IS demand for movies on portables....but not much demand for UMD. If Sony had started an iPod service with films downloadable at $1 per viewing then they would have struck gold. All the major analysts like Gartner & IDC are reporting the value of downloadable movies & TV series is some three times larger than the forecast revenue for "HD" content....

The US is about to enter a recession and over priced non essentials will loose out as mums & dads focus on their mortgages and sending their children off to school. For most people cheap DVD's are still an option especially upscaled so no one is going to worry about not buying MASH in HD... For the kids there is alway Mininova or maybe a cheap iPod service.

Microsoft has got a lot of support signed up for their download service and Sony will have to think fast and try to catch up now.

I dont think its a case of overtaking the 360, its a case of how far past the PS3 can go. Its already outselling the Microsoft console by nearly 1.5k consoles/day and has sold over 49% of the units that the 360 has in under 47% of the time. Would SOny allow a Blu-ray on 360, its their baby and they might want that exclusive. Its the same as arguing iPOD and PS3 should be linked. Bill Gates owns a majority stake in Apple, why would he let iPOD sync with PS3 over the 360? May I also point out that "The Cleaner" is misguided, whilst having some understandable points, your arguement falls flat when you attempt to compare DVD and Blu-Ray quality, the two differ vastly. WHy would Blu-Ray sell for less than DVD when the quality is higher???? No brainer, better product = higher cost. Oh and HD-DVD and Blu-Ray machine sales are in the toilet because nobody knew which format would come out on top. Watch Blu-Ray player sales rise now Warners and certain other studios have or are considering the move to solely Blu-Ray... No offence, but you are one very wrong individual.

All those games MS pay for their console with moneyhats and Sony should let them in on the Blu-ray market? I THINK NOT.

Good thing MS already wasted all  that money developing a 360 with a built-in HD-DVD drive. Fools.

Like The Cleaner said, I'd rather pay $1 or so to download a PSP movie than go get a UMD I have to lug around with my PSP.  I'm just glad the whole Blu-ray to PSP feature is coming out soon.

@intrepidgeeza - I understand that "HD" has higher resolution than "SD" - but if you play a HD device on an average everyday SD TV then what do you get? = nothing.

So your not just asking Mums & Dads to buy a PS3 (or a BD player) - we are also asking them to buy a HD TV and not just any TV mind you, we are suggesting a screen that presents the full HD experience at 1080p. Thats a lot of money...

OK lets look at that 1080p screen. What happens when you play "SD" definition content on a HD screen? For starters four pixels have to combine to make just one pixed at DVD and most non digital broadcasts resolutions. IE the picture looks all blocky... So if someone buys a 1080p screen what content is available in full 1080p besides Bluray. The answer is not much, and certainly not enough for consumers to feel comfortable with. Thats a problem.

Bare in mind that a lot of countries still don't transmit TV signals at HD 1080p or 1080i. In Australia for example we get a mix of resolutions such as 576p. Infact if you remove the countries currently not transmitting in full HD (1080i or better) then you cut out more than 75% of the global market.

So lets downgrade the screen to 780p - suddenly you get a situation where HD looks good (not spectacular but good) and SD looks acceptable (but not quite perfect)... So some could argue that for users with large DVD collections (thats the majority) its probably OK to buy an LCD with a 1280 x 720 or 1024 x 768 resolution screen and it will satisfy their non digital TV, Foxtel (480i) , and DVD requirements. Guess what? those LCD screens are quite cheap....so where does Bluray come in again? Oh yes - so if they buy a 720p or lower screen we need to then compare Bluray at 720p or less to upscaled DVD - the difference aint there is it? Certainly its hard to convince people to throw away their DVD's and rush out and buy Bluray movies at twice or three times the cost...

Thats a dilema that wont gety solved this year I'm guessing. I'll take your challenge and lets look for the super growth of Bluray now that Warner has made their decision. So how much growth do you reckon? 10 x the volume 20 x maybe 100 x ?

@The Cleaner: I wasnt having a b***h, just wondered why you would even present the idea of BD costing less than DVD??? I agreed with many of your points. Yes HD TVS are exp. but not completely so, mine cost £150 Sterling and its a 19" and everything is crisp and lovely, the more you pay the better you get for sure, but BD does actually show up better than DVD on a non-HD TV set aswell, i have one in my room and it works just fine. As I said, people wont have purchased any equipment yet because of the whole "HD War" but we had that with VHS and BetaMax. I will refer to people who already have the equipment as "pioneers" from here in, what they have done is purchase a piece of equipment that is better than average, but these "pioneers" are few and far between. I am sure you are one yourself and from your posts, you are obviously an avid fan of gadgets and the like through your use of detailed knowledge of certain areas, but  now that this war appears to be calming down to a scuffle, I think, as I pointed out yesterday, that the sales of Blu-Ray and the respective players may now be on the rise. Also, non-pioneering sorts such as my own mum expressed an interest in Blu-Ray when she heard about Warners. Her technological know-how is almost null, but she asked wheter I would have Blu-Ray, HD-DVD or SD DVD and I told her straight. If people such as her, who have little knowledge of any equipment become interested (she didn't know a PS3 had BD functionality) then surely the market can expand. So to you The Cleaner, if you were offended by a comment or thought I disagreed woth you, I apologise. I agree with you in the main, just some of your views were a little strange.

No sweat @ intrepidgeeza. No offence taken. I like debating because everyone is correct in a way - its just different perspectives. If we dont question, dont debate we wont learn idea's from each other.

One perspective that we have not discussed in internet bandwidth. It is about to take jumbo steps in bandwidth that will be available in many countries within the next three or four years... It is that soon. Unfortunately I dont know much about European Telco's and their selection but I can say that with DOCSIS 3.0 getting roled out now and network availability in 18 months in the USA  I dont see why anyone would put any more money into any HD (Bluray or HD-DVD). Let me explain.

Comcast have just announced that their DOCSIS 3.0 network is officially being rolled out this year. Thats correct - the company has confirmed that their planned roll out has been given the go ahead and that it will provide its users with 100 - 155MB/s download throughput. - thats 9.6GB in 1 minute so you press the menu, select your HD movie then in about 30 seconds its started with 4 - 5GB in the buffer, 5 minutes into the movie the whole 50GB is done...I dont see the problem with that. I can watch any movie I want when I want and it will cost maybe $3 or $4. How soon until completion...try end of calander year 2009.

If your not satisfied and want mega speed you can have GPON which is getting roled out in Singapore, & Korea. Pack your bags, PS3 & PC and move to either countries because those guys are about to get 4,000Mb per second across the advanced GPON network....Holy Moly!

Telstra (for the Ozies ) have 660MB/s Fios or potentially a hybrid Fios (City metro) /  FTTC/VDSL2 in rural area's. Either choice - you can down a Bluray in a few minutes else wait 18 minutes for the slowest connection if you live in the outback... Again you dont have to actually wait 18 minutes - just 2 or 3 until the buffer is done and remember thats the slowest network.... Japan - we are still waiting to hear what road they will take but we can definately assume it will be fast - real fast.

Similarly games like those managed by Google...ooops!...  I meant to say Valve Corp., are already delivered & maintained by electronic means. It works great. You get all your games 100% patched & optimised and you get all the user mods and fun Machinima based on the games you own are automatically placed in your personalised menu from YouTube...Ooops!... I mean Valves user forums. It's great!

Look each to their own, but with the recent network announcements and actual network construction go aheads by 2010 you'll have bandwidth coming out your R-SS.So Bluray doesnt have much of a window left so here we are in 2008 and still volume is not happening. What can they expect to achieve in 2 years (at best)?
