Music and Video for PlayStation Network

Posted on October 16th, 2007 at 06:38 EDT

Purveyors of Walkmans and exploding batteries, Sony, are planning to increase the media capabilities of their current PlayStation iteration.

The new plan, according to the Financial Times, is for Video and Music to be downloaded from the PlayStation Network to the PS3. While it has already been confirmed that the PSN will soon offer Video-on-demand services, the inclusion of Music downloads is new.

However, no release date or any other details are available at the time of writing. Hopefully, the music will be transferable to a PSP, so it can be listened to on the move.

Also, there will be all kinds of crazy DRM stuff to do with the media, with play of the files likely to be limited to so many PSP’s and the console it was downloaded to.

We'll keep you updated on any further developments.

Stay tuned.

Dont make it too hard for consumers. Try DRM friendly for once.

Remove DRM. Once bought, I don't like restrictions on my property, digital or not.

on the australian psn, you can download music videos (only australian though), so it's not like they haven't started yet.

DRM is the customers greatest enemy -stupid and NOT-AT-ALL-USEFUL- thing

Dont worry about the DRM... I guess you could use somekind of converter or someone will know how to mod it. Not saying thats the best way to fix your problems...!

This is a little late considering what Radiohead, NIN, and Jamiroquai(among others) have been doing lately. I go to Bleep.com for all my electronica. It's cheap, 320kbps, no DRM, I can do whatever I want with it other than give it out to my friends, and I can pay extra to have ultra high quality files. I'm also thinking about doing the Amazon music download service because there's no DRM. I'm not sure if you can transfer to differen't devices etc. though.

I KNOW that Amazon Unbox works with my 8gb Zen(the new one), so it's likely that the music service will too. Will Sony's PSN store work with it? Doubtful. I might use it for movies, so that I can have 1080p versions of stuff for on my TV, but most of my video downloading will be done via Unbox.

I like Sony getting as many services as possible, but I hope doing all these new things wouldn't affect Sony's dedication to the games.

It's nice and all, but as Lithgow stated, don't ruin the whole point of this, gaming.
