New PS2 model to hit US in early 2008

Posted on November 2nd, 2007 at 08:22 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America is to introduce a new PlayStation 2 SKU across the US in early 2008, according to reports from MCV.

Due out some time in the New Year, the new model will retail for just USD 99, and includes its own built-in power supply.

It is currently unknown whether or not the new ‘compact’ version will hit European territories, though it is estimated that retailers will sell the system for as low as GBP 75, possibly less.

Stay tuned for more information as it breaks.

@Tha_Last_Romeo

Why should they? PS2 was the most successful console ever created - it sold over 120 million times. And they will support it throughout another 3 or 4 years so it reaches its 10-year-Lifespan just like the PS3 will. They would never be so dumb and stop making and selling the PS2 cuz it is profitable right now unlike the PS3. Think about it!

Why would they stop?
People still want a PS2, and there is still some developers who care about the PS2. Also, it has the largest games library including both PS1 and PS2.

so if you buy the 40g and this you get full bc for  the same price($1 less really) as buying the 80g with bc. i think his is a better dial than buying the 80g

I understand the lower the better theory when it comes to electronics, but c'mon 75GBP?Such a low price could possibly give the impression that it ain't good enough.

psn id: gingo.... why dont they just decrease the price of the one they aready have out instead of making a new one

Maybe the new one is cheaper to make?

Either way, this is a good thing, especially since the ps3 bc is pretty bad. As for it being too cheap and looking like poor electronics? I'd say it's built a solid enough reputation in the last 7 years to be safe lol

There'd be no reason to make a new PS2...unless Sony is cooking something up for us.  Either way I want one in case my PS2 breaks down or to mod my old PS2.

@Damodoomer:  Every PS2 and PS1 game I can find works in my PS3. I tried all my friends to show them it had true BC and my 60GB does.

On the one hand, I think Sony should stop making them, because every PS2 sold is a customer that did not buy a Ps3. So surface logic would think that Sony is shooting themselves in the foot by still having this thing around. BUT, this machine actually brings in revenue, unlike the ps3 which is, last time I heard, losing money on every sell. So that gives the gaming division at Sony a little bit of funding to improve the PS3, which is always good. And for some reason, I dont think that the PS2 will die as long as the Wii is around. There are a lot of games that are made for the Wii and get ported to PS2 because of the similarity in graphical power. Codemaster's Heatseeker is one recent example off the top of my head

He!! yeah, that is great news actually. The power brick is a pain in my car. I have 4 of them and thats a lot of wire. With just power cords it makes it much cleaner

So what should we call it the PS2 slimeline 2? I'm not sure where Sony is going with this. Sure the PS2 is one of the best selling consoles to date but shouldn't they focus more effort on the PS3?

I don't get this. ? Wouldn't including the power supply unit in the console make it bigger than the current slim? And why put it back. I dug it not being in the console.

However it would be sweet if they had new firmware that would make the PS2 a bit more HD friendly.

people still seem to want ps2;s so sony will sell them as long as they can, this new slimmer than the already slim ps2 will be sweet.

Sonys really milking the PS2 for every penny lol

its smart though, what is there 3,000 ps2 games available

ands not many people can afford a ps3 or 360

so then theres the $100 ps2 for the other and casual group

Yay, the ugly bulky Power Supply is gone, but then again what was wrong with the Fat PS2? Have you seen the monster that XboX comes with ? LOL

What Sony really should be doing is releasing a new improved Fat PS2 that supports SATA2 HDs, a nice MP3 player inbuilt and a replacement for that ugly on screen playback control. Maybe an Extra 2 USB, for Linux dabblers.

And most of all, it needs a severe upgrade for those Memory Cards. 64mb or even 128mb still isnt enough, we need GB's !, how about a Memory Card with a SD Slot in it supporting 4gb - PERFECT !

Oh and i dub it..... The PS2.5   :P

BREAKING NEWS

Sony has gone back to the drawing board and designed a new PS2 configuration. In a bid to keep costs down, Sony will now disable compatibility with PS2 and PSX games. Infact, the new model PS2 wont be compatible with any Playstation games what so ever but will be positioned as a multimedia DVD player.

Sony has also taken the opportunity to removed the regular range of AV outputs and replaced with the new propriatary SkrimpleJack(tm) connector something that will require users to upgrade (or downgrade) their current TV to a new Bravia TV model fitted with a SkrimpleJack input connector.

A new advertising campaign featuring a baby eating its own leg and drinking blood from a decapitated goat whilst screaming the tag line: "Liquidation Sale - all got top go!" will be released in an effort to sell more PS2's during 2008.
