PlayStation-edu to lead way for future developers

Posted on June 7th, 2008 at 12:28 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has officially revealed the PlayStation-edu initiative that will allow colleges and universities nationwide the opportunity to obtain PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable dev kits for their classroom setting.

The company is hoping this will lead to engineer and computer science students gaining a better understanding on how some of the hardware works, and that by giving individuals access to such technology while at school will help contribute to a more efficient workforce in the future.

"We expect this program to be a great tool to teach students about the PlayStation platforms," commented Mark Danks, Senior Manager, Developer Support, on the PlayStation blog.

Schools will be required to legally purchase these dev kits and will also be required to sign legal agreements in order to get their hands on the SDK, documentation, demo code, samples and web site support. There is no specified date as to when this will be released, but we're assuming it will launch with the Fall 2008 semester.

Stay tuned for further information as it breaks.

I would imagine this depends more on the school itself, if they dont go in for the course and buy the devkits you cant get it at all, but if your school is in a nother country and decideds to give it a shot they'd simply have to pay the money and signe the nessesary agreements for the equipment.

Hopefully it is not a lot of money for the schools to buy

It would all depend on the size of the classes they are wanting to teach with them.  They would either have to buy  at least  ten kits if they were going to do group assignments.  or maybe up to 30 if they are doing individual assignments.  It really is a great idea to do. Wish that was available when I was still in high school, maybe I would have wnet to college.

I think they are doing this in order to essentially in the future come up with a similar platform like that in XNA game development so that more people become potential 3rd party developers in the future.

Great idea, but the PS2 has just about hit the end of the road.  I guess it would be nice to see how a console actually works though.

Thinking that I started a Computer Science mayor but never finished it because of my job... if some college here buys any dev kits I might consider studying again
