Takeuchi divulges Resident Evil 5 plot details

Posted on June 11th, 2008 at 07:45 EDT

Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi has revealed that he had “no choice” but to set the upcoming survival horror title in Africa due to the game’s story revolving around the origins of the Progenitor Virus.

Speaking with Game Videos, Takeuchi stated, "The main reason that we chose Africa as the setting for Resident Evil 5 is actually from a clue that came up in Resident Evil: Code Veronica, where it was revealed that Africa was the original of the Progenitor Virus, which is the origin of all the viruses that appear in the series.”

Elsewhere, he also divulged a few tidbits on main protagonist, Chris Redfield, confirming that he is no longer part of the Special Tactics and Rescue Service (S.T.A.R.S) team from the original Resident Evil title, and now belongs to a new organisation, currently identified as ‘BSAA.’

“It's been ten years since the events of Resident Evil 1. One little hint we can give you is that Chris is no longer a member of S.T.A.R.S. and S.T.A.R.S. itself as an organisation is defunct,” added Takeuchi.

“You might see a little mark on his arm that talks about the new organisation that he's a member of. Who that organisation is and what they're up to, that's going to be another important element of the story."

Check out the interview in the video below.

More information on the game is expected to show up at E3 in July.

Sounds Good. I'm hoping this one will be a good mix of RE4 action elements and RE1 and 2 horror elements.

This is very interesting because I did not play through all of Code Veronica and I was wondering what made them choose Africa. People also need to stop with all the racial acquisations about this game, its just ridiculous. This game is gonna rock the house!

I am looking forward to the game. I thought code veronica was amazing.

Why are people making a big deal about africa in the comments? If the man wants to explain the origins then let him... dont start something when there is nothing there. The people who originally levied the complain have long been silenced after a wave of gamers (regaurdless of race corrected them about their uninformed opinions. Don't let the media make you think that it is still an issue. It isn't. But it willbe if people continue to be beligerant and beat their drum about because it starts to mark deepseated personal issues. This is just like that supposed racist PSP commercial. It is all in the eyes of the beholder.

psn id: gingo.... i think africa is a great setting for the game and its nonsense that people think it was set there with racist intentions, its where the virus was first discovered and hopefully it reveals a lot of the questions that have yet to be answered

@Staticneuron, if its not an issue then why does he have to explain the reasoning behind the location???? I have never heard of any other Game developer having to justify a games geographical location. He quotes comments like "no choice" and "the main reason" ............Go figure! sounds like its still an issue to some!

Hummm I'm a little unsure about the Africa setting also. I prefer my horror games set in the eerie western towns, villages and castles. If some of the game was set in the dark jungle mountainous regions of Africa I could see that working well. I'll still be keeping an eye on this title to see how well it fairs when its released.

@richkaos

Chances are he explained because he was asked. Like I said above this situation arose and was dropped last year and many people even well known game reviewers such as N'gai spoke about the issue in a productive way.

Example of old issue

If a reporter or reviewer ask's it doesn't mean that it is still an issue.. it means that the reporter asked. Many journalist ask what they think their readership wants to hear and it may not be entirely so.

But I am glad that they did because I forgot that tidbit about the Progenitor Virus (shame on me) and I am sure people were interested about hearing about that info...... not because of any race issues but for a reason why chris seems to be in africa. The thought in my mind was if it was a side story like RE4 (the goal was to save presidents daughter) or was there a more familiar reason for explaining the setting.

I know for a fact that questions about a games setting are asked all the time. Such as army of two and MGS4 but this only seems to stick out for you because it was a hot button issue in the past. And thats where it should stay..... in the past. Because it was proven that disscusion couldn't be attained revolving such an issue.

Hopefully if the AI is as interesting as it was in RE4, others will follow in focusing on a robust AI system considering its something often not talked about when it comes to next gen games. Besides looking good, the focus has to be on having a solid gameplay and with that it involves an AI that is competent enough to really deliver a challenge to players.

Capcom:  Please tell us a release date!!!  I need to ask for a week off from work!  This game has so much to live up to after RE4, but from the looks of it, they are fully aware of this and will deliver.
