Target to pull all copies of Manhunt 2 off shelves

Posted on November 4th, 2007 at 06:50 EDT

It should be no surprise to you that Manhunt is yet again stirring controversy. The game has been all over the news since its announcement, and even after its release it finds new ways to stay in the spotlight.

The latest story comes with great thanks to Target, one of the nations largest retail chains. According to Evil Avatar, local Target stores have discontinued the sale of the game, due to the recent hack discovery which unlocks adult content.

Rockstar, developer of the game, is known for having these accessible unlockables in their games. A couple of years ago, you may recall the first printing of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and a little thing called the Hot Coffee mod. While these mature themed additions to the game are not easily accesible, it has created problems with the ESRB in the past. Luckily for Rockstar, Manhunt 2 will keep its M rating despite the hack.

Although the game will stay at its current rating, it appears that Target is going to pull this game from its shelves and possibly stop selling it online as well. Take-Two, the games publisher has apparently agreed to purchase all unopened copies of the game from the retailer.

While this may not be a permanent stock pull, or even a nation wide deal, the online listing for the game is showing as online only. Be sure to check back for an update as it becomes available.

You make Manhunt2 / Rockstar sound worse than it really is, the hack simply removes a filter that blocked out some of the gore, the ESRB knew about the content hidden by the filter; it is nothing like the 'hot coffee' mod, where content in the game was not shown to the ESRB. Neither or these are unlockables, as that infers that Rockstar left them in the game for users to gain access to. Both of these are however illegal hacks, but where the 'hot coffee' mod put in code to give access to content that shouldn't have been there anymore, the manhunt2 PSP hack removes content, by removing the filter. Neither are unlockables, neither are similar.

wow morons. why would you buy the damn games in the first place, if you arent going to sell them. And hold onto probably thousands of copies, delaying consumers the ability to find copies. Its just a video game, im sure you guys sell worse dvd's at your freckin stores!

thank you target for doing the mature thing and pulling the game. i know alot of people shop that store because of the family friendly merchandise they sell.

as for all those posting hate about target. you guys all cry like a baby about free speech and free choice but when someone has a different opinion on what they should sell in THEIR OWN STORE you guys blast them for being unamerican or stupid. you can find this game online or other adult retailers so i don't see the problem and does anyone really think that rockstar didn't purposely put this hack out there so the public could find it and manipulate it so they could still put their original banned product in the hands of the public. rockstar said screw you to target and others by not eliminating the code entirely knowing full well they were going to double cross target and others by letting the code out for the original version. well, target called them on it and said take back your crappy game (and it is crappy...i played it) and actually try making a game that has some imagination instead of pointless violence. this game was soo boring target just saved tons of gamers from playing a game of complete drivel. i appreciate it when people take a stand in what they believe is best for them even if it is against my own. you guys just cry and bad mouth. you should be ashamed because the american way is for people to have choice. not just you but target too.

one of the reasons R* was trying so hard to get an M rating is so they COULD be sold in places like target and wallmart, if they're just going to pull the games of the shelves then why bother making the changes? R* should sue them, I'm sure there some contractual clause about failing to live up their side of the bargin as a point of purchase by doing this.

Target is stupid.  They sell movies like Saw 3 and the Devils Reject's but they pull video games??  That makes sense!  I don't know about any of you, but i will not be doing any shopping at target this holiday season....except for buying  Blu Ray movies (since they are only selling BD players).

Arn't they making a manhunt movie?  This is really dumb.  We need a 17+ section or whateer the rating is then and have it ni a special room or have it a secret game list then.  This game is not bad at all.  Its just when dumb kids kid it and whose fault is that, its the parents, not the game.  This is nothing worst then a Movie!

I agree with Blue Steel. It's hypocritical. Anywho, I was thinking of checking this game out for the PSP or PS2, I haven't decided which one yet, though.

If you can find a way to hack your games, then you're probably old enough to view the material anyway.

@ Alpha2, you're wrong.  Sony refuses to let AO games on their consoles, as well as MS and Nintendo.  Otherwise they could have kept the adult rating and sold them online through a Sony store or from Rockstar themselves , and not had to worry about the ignorant franchises.

@Davin_G:  you are very quick to judge others opinions as well from your forum post.  Must be a religious affiliation on your part.  I personally could care less about this game; however,  I do take offense to a major RETAIL chain store making a decision for me.  This title is rated 'M' for a reason...VIOLENCE being just one of the reasons why.  Gratuitous violence.... from what I have seen...I would concur.  But none the less, I am an adult way over the legal age and have the choice to purchase this game on my own accord.  You don't think the violence in HALO, Call of Duty, Gears of War, Resistance, etc... is excessive?  Damn, I forgot... they are rated 'M' also..but you don't see them being sensored.  Children are not able to buy this game on their own... if they are... the store should be fined.  If an adult buys it for them... they are idiots.  Parents need to step up to their responsibilities as parents and stop whining because they have to sensor what THEIR child plays.  Sure Rockstar has had a shady past with their hidden content; however, this title does not fall in that category.  Their fix to the violence was to include a "blurrer" fix so you could not actually see fine details in executions, etc.  This is only a software fix.  To suggest that they themselves put the means out there to reverse this fix is assinine and a little naive on your part.  Are you not even minutely aware of what hackers are capable of?????  Look how fast they crack every single update for the PSP.  ANYTHING can be hacked in this day and age (for now).  I highly doubt you have played the game based on your comments.  Ashamed?  I think not.  I personally don't think this game falls under free speech however it does fall under freedom of choice.  I would also have to disagree with you on why people shop Target.  I think more shop there because of the cheap prices ... not "family friendly merchandise" as you have to eloquently stated.  Do they have the right to sell any merchandise they want in their store...?  Of course they do... but should they pull merchandise based on naive assumptions and selfimposed moralism?  You sound like a typical religious fruitcake hiding behind false facts (oh another religious trait).  If you have played the game and didn't actually like it...then kudos to you...you are entitled to your opinion as misguided as it may be.

Nice one UnasFortuna.  That stupid double standard that BlueSteel18 pointed out works well with your argument.  Necrophelia and body mutilation are seen in a much more realistic view in movies but when you get the the games that don't look even close to the movies, everyone is quick to judge.  Nobody puts up a finger if its shooting aliens or terrorists in games, but when they don't understand the concept, they act ignorantly, uneducated.  All these people now are so damn worried about video games that you spend hours on AT HOME and forget all those teenagers out drinking, smoking, and endangering everyones lives by driving as well.  How about you do something about the drunk teens who can't drive before you say anything about my button combinations.

@Ryoma, the Hot Coffee mod is from GTA San Andreas where you could be seen having sex with a woman. This is different, however, than Lair's HC mod.  Though Lair's is a nice parody.

Target = stupid for taking mh2 off the shelves for ps2 and psp.

They should just get rid of the psp one since theres that hack for it. Because mh2 for ps2 is well toned down but it still have the storydriven and the gore some stuff rockstar left in on the ps2 version like u can blow the faces off bad guys and put holes in their head.
