Warner Bros to endorse Blu-ray?

Posted on October 30th, 2007 at 07:55 EDT

Warner Bros has revealed that the company may consider changing its strategy in regards to supporting both Blu-ray and HD DVD, hinting it may shift focus in order to support one format exclusively.

Up until this point, the firm has remained one of the only major companies that have continued to release titles spanning both formats; however, this could be all set to change, according to company Vice President of High Definition Media, Dan Silverberg.

“One thing that may be changing is our strategy,” said Silverberg, during a Blu-ray media briefing yesterday.

“When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter.”

While not going into detail, it’s logical to assume from Sliverberg’s comments that Warner may have been tempted to embrace Blu-ray exclusively, given that Sony’s technology has remained the consumers number one choice in high definition viewing over Toshiba's HD DVD format.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

End it and get it over with.

Blu-Ray is the winner from the looks of it.

Well.... It would be said if HD-DVD made some kind of great deal for them to produce HD-DVD movies at a low price.

@Tha_Last_Romeo

Do you really think so? The consumer demands are the ones the companies try to meet and even with HD-DVD's deals (5 free movies) in addition to the fact that the hardware continues to be half the price of blu ray something has to be said about which side seems to be holding on for dear life.

It's about time companies start picking a single format and get this "format war" over with.  Fortunately for Blu-Ray and PS3 owners, not even Transformers could persuade higher HD DVD sales.  There is already a clear winner, unfortunately for the consumer the HD DVD camp keeps trying to hold on for no reason.

it will be very smart decision  if they support blue ray!! and will be stupid if  they decide HD DVD!! why? because blue ray selling more even when the hardware is twice higher then the rival! and now that ps3 prices is going down and in spring will even go down more it looks it has a brighter future!

For one I care about this kind of news. Blu Ray is a part of my PS3 therefore I would love Blu Ray to be the format of choice. As  said before, if the news is of no interest for you, skip it.

Hoping that WB will go Blu, but again you never know. Didnt see the Paramount/Dreamworks thing come. If WB goes HD DVD, damn that would be bad....

This statement was at a Blu-ray briefing.  With sales #'s the way they are it's highly unlikely that they'll announce hd-dud exclusivity.

Don't be so Naive.  WIth Toshiba HD DVD players at Walmart and Circuit City for under $200, Warner may actually be hinting at going HDDVD.  And look what Sears is doing!    Everyone keeps saying $200 is the magic number for the average consumer.

Blu-Ray is going to win if this happen.

HD-DVD: Universal & Paramount

Blu-Ray: Everything else

Would  the format competition end if Warner Bros simply joined Universal, Dreamworks & Paramount on the HD-DVD ?

Eitherway I dont see HD taking off - DVD will still be the biggest platform for the next 5 years and downloads will be second.

This is not about a war of the formats....it's the new trend!

Consumers (as in the average people) decide on which is cooler HD-DVD or Blu-Ray! There are many MP3 players outthere, but which brand is dominating the world over? Although iPods are easy to use, they are pricey and the battery doesn't last long! The name itself sounds pretty cool. Ergo, which HD name sounds cooler? DVD is a new brand name, it has no history. Sony has had a long history, although not all happy.  Anyways, Sony HAS let the porn industry to use BD's for adult moooovies! :D  Personally, I think Blu-Ray is cool.

On top of the rumored sale of Vaio to Toshiba or Dell, and the seperation and sell down of  Sony's music business, here's the latest gossip about Sony's piece by piece sell off....

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sony Pictures, a unit of Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research), is considering selling half of its animation studio and a larger portion of its digital visual-effects company, the New York Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Representatives from Sony Pictures were not immediately available for comment.

Sony Pictures has hired investment bank Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin to appraise the value of the two businesses, according to the newspaper.

A sale of both could reap about $500 million, the newspaper said, quoting sources involved in the talks.

@clarky

There are plenty of news, screenshots, previews, developer intereviews and so forth on this site, go check em'.

You care enough to read the article and post a comment after seeing the article title which clearly states what the article is about.

And you ask who cares? many people in here are interested in the format at war because at war here isn't only a format that the movies are on, here is a format that our PS3 games are on and of course we want to know how well the format is doing, it is part of the PS3's future.

I have been saying it for months. WB is on the verge of a major policy shift in regards to HD and it looks to be in the color of Blu.

Weinstein is next, then Universal....who gives a crap about paramount.

Gaming isnt at stake because of Bluray. Its too slow, they could do a lot better. If Bluray fails as a movie format I would not care. If Plastation fails as a gaming console I'll be very upset. If Playstation fails because Bluray made PS3 uncompetitive & diluted gaming focus - I'll be very ticked off!
